What to Prepare Before You Travel

Published

Accommodation, documents, money and arrival logistics — the practical list worth working through in the weeks before departure.

The weeks between confirming a place and travelling are mostly logistics, and they are easier if the list exists in one place.

Accommodation first, because it is the constraint everything else fits around. University-managed accommodation usually has an application window tied to your offer; private arrangements are best made with a viewing, or through someone you trust, rather than remotely and in advance of arrival.

Documents next. Carry originals of anything that establishes your right to study — your offer, your visa documentation, your qualifications — in your hand luggage, and keep digital copies somewhere you can reach without your own device.

Money is the step most often left too late. Opening a local bank account generally requires proof of address and proof of study, which means it happens after arrival, so plan for the first few weeks on what you can access internationally.

Finally, the first week. Registration, enrolment and any required immigration check-in usually have deadlines measured in days, not weeks. Knowing what they are before you land makes the difference between a straightforward arrival and a stressful one.
